Tariq Banuri, Ph.D.

Dr. Banuri is Associate Fellow at Tellus Institute. Before joining Tellus in 1998, he had broad experience in policy development, combining research with organizing and leading multi-stakeholder processes. His work has focused on conceptual as well as practical issues in governance for sustainable development, including the analysis of national and global institutions, legal systems and processes, community development at local levels, collaborative management of natural resources, civil society processes, and economic and trade policies. He has participated in numerous national and international efforts, such as the Steering Committee on Higher Education, which was established by the President of Pakistan; the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, as Board Chairman; the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, as a Lead Author and the Governing Council of IUCN-the World Conservation Union, where he was the elected Chair of the Commission on Environmental, Economic, and Social Policy (CEESP). In recognition of his contributions to research, education, and public policy analysis, the President of Pakistan decorated him with the Presidential medal. In 2004, Dr. Banuri became director of the SEI-Asia in Bangkok, one of the four centers of the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Dr. Banuri received his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1986.
